Plants in the betulaceae (birch) family are trees or shrubs, around 167 worldwide and six (native) in the UK - alder, hazel, hornbeam and three types of birch - plus a few naturalised species. Flowers are catkins, and plants are monoecious, with male and female flowers on the same specimen. The catkins appear early in the year, usually before the leaves.
