Plants in the colchicaceae (colchium family) were formerly part of the liliaceae; there are nearly 300 species worldwide, but only one in the British Isles, colchicum autumnale. Leaves have parallel veins, and grow either directly from the ground, or along the flowering stem. Flowers have three petals and three sepals, usually similar in appearance, and six stamens.
