White bryony is the sole UK species in the cucurbitaceae (gourd) family, which has nearly 1,000 members worldwide. Plants are creepers or vines, with simple or lobed leaves, large fruits, often edible, and five-petalled flowers, the petals generally fused to form a bell-shaped corolla.
