The corolla is tubular, purplish, up to 20 mm long, with four or five triangular lobes, and a ring of short white hairs around the top of the throat. The calyx, more than half the height of the corolla tube, is divided to about half its length into five equally sized lobes, Stems are hairless, and square in cross-section

Narrowly lanceolate, up to 2 cm long; at the base (visible only in the first, non-flowering year) and between five and 14 opposite pairs along the stem
