Like all members of this genus, utricularia vulgaris is a partly carnivorous plant, using submerged bladders to trap small aquatic insects.

Flowers:
In open clusters of two to eight, on reddish, leafless stalks. The yellow flowers have a short upper lip and a larger, pouched lower lip with backwards spur. The lower lobe is streaked with red, and its side margins are folded back, Flowers are attached by pedicels of up to 15 mm

Submerged, finely pinnately-divided into thread-like, bristle-tipped segments
