There are around 20 British species in the saxifragaceae, or saxifrage family, a group of small herbs; a few of these are naturalised rather than native. Leaves are usually alternate, undivided and often lobed, while flowers have a five (less often four) lobed calyx, the same number of petals, and twice the number of stamens.
